Description

Are you a National Certified Counselor with a natural ability to connect with kids? While most schools hire school counselors to put on a show for parents and accommodate their needs, Alpha is looking for a counselor to focus solely on supporting the emotional needs of our students.

Alpha is building the Stanford of K-12 education. We are an innovative new school with a life-changing value proposition for students and plans to expand rapidly. We make three promises to students and their families: students will love school, students will learn 3-5x faster through the use of adaptive learning apps instead of teachers, and students will learn valuable life skills to supplement their academic training.

In this role, you will not only personally support students' emotional growth at school, but also design and implement innovative group workshops aimed at proactive mental health care. Additionally, you will be responsible for building a library of mental health resources to provide our students with the social and emotional tools they need to thrive. The student activities, group workshops, and staff training sessions you design will ultimately be used in Alpha school across the country once we expand.

If you are a talented school counselor who kids love, then come build the student mental health support network of the future at the world’s most innovative school!

What you will be doing

  • Incident Response - Helping students in need immediately, conducting root cause analyses after any incidents occur, and devising plans to prevent similar incidents in the future
  • Relationship Development - Building familiarity with the students and establishing a safe space for students in need of one
  • Promoting Wellness Habits - Curating external mental health resources (e.g. mental health apps for students, staff training sessions with local mental health specialists, etc.)

What you will NOT be doing

  • Diagnosing or treating mental health issues
  • Waiting for students to hit low points before establishing relationships with them
  • Helping students try to fit into Alpha’s unique environment when it is not the right fit for them

Key responsibilities

  • Equip students with the emotional tools needed to love school, learn 2x faster, and learn life skills during workshops

Candidate requirements

  • 3+ years of counseling experience with K-8 students
  • Willingness to live in Austin, TX (this is an in-person role)
  • National Certified Counselor licensed to practice in Texas (or eligible and willing to transfer license to Texas)
  • US work authorization
