School Counselor   $150,000 USD/year

Description

"This is not a school that is replacing teachers. This is not a threat to teachers in any way, shape, or form. This is reimagining what a teacher can be."
— Sam DePalo, Lead Guide, Alpha Fort Worth Texas

Alpha is hiring.

  • Compensation: $150,000 USD/year ($75/hour)
  • Schedule: 40 hours/week
  • Location: Remote, United States
  • Travel: Some campus travel, costs covered

Don’t lower the bar for students with learning differences. Build the support that helps them clear it—with the freedom to shape support plans and make a difference across Alpha’s schools from coast to coast.

At Alpha, students learn through an app-based, mastery-driven model, supported by Guides who coach their progress. Students with learning differences need accommodations designed for that environment: practical changes to app settings, Guide actions, and workshop participation that help them meet ambitious academic standards.

You’ll own that support from the beginning. Before enrollment, you’ll interpret evaluations, understand each student’s needs, and help Admissions determine whether Alpha can meet them. For admitted students, you’ll create an actionable support plan before their first day. Then you’ll work with Guides and families to track progress, identify obstacles, and adjust the plan when the evidence calls for it.

This role gives you ownership of a focused mission across a national school network. Your success will show up in students’ academic growth, their continued enrollment, and support that is ready when they need it. You’ll also bring a builder’s mindset to recurring administrative work, creating AI-enabled workflows that improve how you organize and manage your work.

If you enjoy translating complex evaluations into clear actions—and following through until those actions produce results—this role puts that expertise at the center of the student experience.

What you will be doing

  • Assessing learning needs before enrollment. Interpret psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations, prior Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 plans, placement data, and parent input. Produce clear learning profiles that explain whether Alpha can meet each student’s needs and what support would be required.
  • Designing support that works from day one. Translate learning profiles into Alpha-specific accommodations, including app settings, Guide actions, workshop adjustments, and measurable goals. Walk Guides and families through each plan before the student starts.
  • Managing a coast-to-coast caseload. Review learning progress, assessment results, Guide observations, and family feedback. Identify stalled progress early, decide what needs to change, and give each action a clear owner.
  • Equipping Guides and families to act. Explain support decisions clearly, coach Guides on implementing accommodations, and maintain productive relationships around high academic expectations.
  • Improving recurring workflows. Build and use AI-enabled tools to automate repetitive administrative tasks, organize follow-ups, and free up more time for student support.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Providing therapy, long-term mental-health counseling, or crisis counseling.
  • Administering diagnostic or psychoeducational testing.
  • Handling college applications, career counseling, or course scheduling.
  • Delivering classroom instruction or pull-out tutoring.
  • Designing Alpha’s network-wide social-emotional learning curriculum.
  • Lowering academic expectations as a substitute for effective accommodations.

Key responsibilities

Ensure students with learning differences grow academically at rates comparable to their peers and remain enrolled through timely, practical support plans and ongoing, data-driven adjustments.

Candidate requirements

  • A current, active school counselor or school psychologist certification or license issued by a US state. A national credential alone, such as NCSP, does not meet this requirement.
  • At least five years of paid, professional K–12 experience as a school counselor, school psychologist, special education teacher, learning specialist, or interventionist. Tutoring and paraprofessional experience do not count toward this requirement.
  • Experience contributing to the development or implementation of IEPs or Section 504 plans in a paid professional role.
  • Experience working in an environment where student outcomes, caseload results, or school performance targets were tracked and reviewed.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and using at least one AI tool beyond one-off chat, personally or professionally—for example, a custom GPT, a structured Claude or ChatGPT Project, an automation with an AI step, or a script connected to email or documents. This experience does not need to involve student information.
  • Based in the United States and authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willingness to work remotely with colleagues across US time zones and undertake some campus travel.

Nice to have

  • A PhD in school psychology, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience designing accommodations for an app-based or mastery-driven learning environment.
