Description

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is an in-person role located in Brownsville, Texas.

Are you an early elementary reading specialist? Are you confident that you can help K-2 students not just learn to read but learn to love learning? Are you ready for a better way of approaching education? If so, this is the position for you.

Alpha is seeking an early elementary guide with a reading focus to join its growing team and help fulfill its mission to build better schools. This is an onsite position at our campus in Brownsville, TX, and is focused on working with K-2 students.

Alpha is building the Stanford of K-12 education. We are a private equity-backed EdTech startup with a life-changing value proposition for students and plans to expand rapidly. We make three promises to students and their families: students will love school, students will learn 3-5x faster through the use of adaptive learning apps and learning science principles, and students will learn valuable life skills to supplement their academic training.

This is not a traditional reading instructor position where you will use a top-down approach to transfer information to students. At Alpha, you will leverage cutting-edge adaptive learning apps and deliver engaging workshops to focused reading groups that make learning fun and effective.

Join us to have a transformational impact on your students while taking a huge leap in your career at the world's most innovative school!

What you will be doing

  • Motivate students to work hard. Students do their core academic work on adaptive software. You will motivate students to practice phonics and reading skills with you every day and put in the work to accomplish their reading goals.
  • Provide engaging phonics practice for kids. Traditional phonics instruction is often boring for students. At Alpha, love of school is at the center of everything we do. You will design engaging reading practice for kids and make sure they look forward to coming to school each day. You will prepare and execute learning activities that consider students’ learning styles and needs across each reading group.
  • Monitor student progress and adapt accordingly. You are the expert on students’ progression through reading levels, as well as their phonics and writing growth. You will assess readiness to advance through the reading levels, as well as monitor and provide support to aid each student’s individualized progress.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Leading traditional lectures that students find boring or lack interaction.
  • Pushing kids to the point of burnout or disengagement.

Key responsibilities

You will ensure that your students love school while learning 3-5x faster than in traditional schools.

Candidate requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in elementary education or a Bachelor’s degree (in any subject) and teaching experience
  • Experience as a K-2 teacher, reading coach, or literacy specialist as demonstrated by formal training or professional development experience in a reading & phonics framework
  • Live in or be willing to relocate to Brownsville, TX
  • Legal right to work in the US without visa sponsorship

Nice to have

Conversational Spanish language proficiency - Many of our students are bilingual. While instruction occurs in English, being able to communicate with students in their language of choice is a plus.
