Description

Please note: This is an in-person, salaried ($60,000/yr) role based in Austin, Texas.

Are you passionate about emotional intelligence and equipping students with the tools they need to thrive? Are you ready to join a team where creativity is welcome, but stacks of paperwork aren't? Alpha Austin is seeking a  certified counselor to join our team and provide a safe, nurturing environment for our students beginning in August 2023.

Alpha is building the Stanford of K-12 education. We are an innovative new school with a life-changing value proposition for students and plans to expand rapidly. We make three promises to students and their families: students will love school, students will learn 3-5x faster through the use of adaptive learning apps instead of teachers, and students will learn valuable life skills to supplement their academic training.

In this role, you will support students' emotional growth at school. You'll do this through traditional 1:1 relationship-building as well as group workshops. You'll build a library of mental health resources to provide our students with the social and emotional tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. Your work will lay the foundation for EQ and social-emotional learning across our growing network of schools. And best of all? You won't be working alone. You'll have the support of our Counseling Lead and the buy-in of campus staff, who will work alongside you to implement your creative ideas!

If you are a talented counselor ready to build the best emotional intelligence & mental health support system out there, we want to talk to you!

What you will be doing

  • Building relationships with each student, getting to know their unique needs and interests
  • Promoting campus-wide mental wellness through resource identification, workshops, staff training, etc.
  • Hosting emotional intelligence workshops to teach K-8 students research-backed skills
  • Deescalating and processing with students immediately after any incidents
  • Conducting root cause analyses and working with the Counseling Lead to develop plans to prevent future behavioral challenges
  • Communicating clearly and calmly about students' strengths, challenges, and needs with parents

What you will NOT be doing

  • Diagnosing or treating mental health issues
  • Serving as a disciplinarian or classroom aide
  • Helping students try to fit into Alpha’s unique environment when it is not the right fit for them

Key responsibilities

  • Equip students with the emotional intelligence tools needed to love school, learn 2x faster, and learn life skills

Candidate requirements

  • A Master's degree in a counseling-related field (e.g., Psychology, School Counseling, Social Work, etc.)
  • Be a National Certified Counselor, LPC, MSW, CPC, or Certified School Counselor licensed to practice in Texas or eligible & willing to transfer license to TX
  • 2+ years of counseling experience with Kindergarten - 4th grade students
  • Willingness to work on-site at our Austin, TX campus
