Reading Tutor   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • $100,000 annual salary, paid weekly, including health, dental, and vision benefits starting day one
  • Full-time on-site at an Alpha campus: Phoenix, AZ; Oklahoma City or Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, Fort Worth, Houston (South Houston or The Woodlands), or Plano, TX; Park City (Salt Lake City), UT; or Dorado, Puerto Rico (relocation assistance available)
  • 40 hours per week, 100% classroom-based with K-2 students

You have invested years in structured literacy. Whether through Orton-Gillingham, LETRS, Wilson, IMSE, or a Master's in reading, you can identify a phonemic gap from a single miscue and build a phonics lesson from scratch without a script. That level of expertise is expected. It will not set you apart.

What sets you apart is this: young children are drawn to you. At Alpha, a Guide is first and foremost a compelling, energetic presence that students eagerly engage with. Your structured-literacy training opens the door; your capacity to captivate a K-2 classroom during a 20-minute workshop is what secures the position. If the phrase "compelling, energetic presence" does not resonate, this role is not the right fit.

Alpha has redesigned traditional schooling. Academic content is delivered through AI-adaptive applications — no lectures, no textbooks, no district pacing calendars. Your work represents the one domain where human expertise cannot be replaced. You will create small-group reading workshops informed by live student performance data and facilitate motivation sessions that guide 100% of your students toward their weekly app targets, using Alpha's motivational framework (school currency, leaderboards, age-appropriate game mechanics).

Your early months focus on building rapport and trust. Workshops must be engaging, appropriately leveled, and demonstrably effective. Student satisfaction metrics and "love your Guide" feedback (target 90%+) directly reflect your success. Once you have proven your impact, your responsibilities expand: analyzing AI-generated performance insights to refine upcoming instruction, communicating fluency gains and decoding progress to families, and influencing how Alpha's K-2 reading model evolves in tandem with adaptive technology. As Alpha opens new locations, your methods will become the blueprint for reading instruction across campuses.

Our hiring process includes recording a brief video in which you share an engaging story aimed at young children, and spending a full day on campus working directly with K-2 students. Low energy with children will disqualify candidates, regardless of credentials. That is intentional. Apply today.

What you will be doing

  • Creating and facilitating small-group K-2 reading workshops rooted in structured-literacy principles (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, LETRS, IMSE, or comparable), informed by live student data
  • Conducting daily motivation sessions designed to ensure 100% of students reach their weekly adaptive-app milestones, leveraging Alpha's motivational framework (school currency, leaderboards, age-appropriate gamification)
  • Conducting and interpreting running records, fluency assessments, and decoding evaluations to monitor progress and refine instruction session by session
  • Analyzing AI-generated performance data from Alpha's adaptive learning platforms to differentiate instruction in real time, not only during planning
  • Serving as the approachable, dynamic adult your K-2 students are excited to see each day

What you will NOT be doing

  • Implementing a published reading curriculum, scripted lesson plan, or district-mandated pacing guide; you will design lessons independently from student data
  • Delivering whole-group lectures; instruction takes place in small, targeted groups while students complete academic subjects through adaptive applications
  • Serving as a reading consultant, instructional coach, or district specialist; your work happens in the classroom with students daily
  • Managing traditional classroom routines — subject-by-subject lectures, homework correction, test preparation; your schedule consists of workshops, motivation sessions, and data-informed small-group instruction
  • Grading assignments or completing report cards; student progress is documented in app analytics and your running records

Key responsibilities

Provide structured-literacy instruction that produces measurable acceleration in K-2 reading performance across phonics, fluency, and decoding.

Candidate requirements

  • Structured-literacy certification (Orton-Gillingham, LETRS, Wilson Reading System, IMSE, CERI, Neuhaus, UFLI, or equivalent) OR a Master's degree in reading instruction
  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline, plus 2+ years of full-time K-2 structured reading instruction in a school or clinical environment, applying systematic phonics or structured literacy
  • Proven ability to independently design reading lessons and clearly explain your instructional content and methods, without dependence on a published program
  • Availability to work in person full-time at one Alpha campus: Phoenix, AZ; Oklahoma City or Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, Fort Worth, Houston (South Houston or The Woodlands), or Plano, TX; Park City (Salt Lake City), UT; or Dorado, Puerto Rico (relocation assistance available)
  • Willingness to teach all K-2 students (not exclusively struggling readers) and to incorporate AI and adaptive-learning tools into everyday instruction
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. or Puerto Rico without requiring visa sponsorship
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency required for the Dorado, Puerto Rico campus

Nice to have

  • Practical experience with AI-powered or adaptive reading platforms (e.g., Amira, Lexia, i-Ready, Reading Plus) for instructional planning or student data interpretation
  • Documented reading outcomes (fluency gains in WCPM, accuracy increases, decoding level advancement) you can cite with specific figures
  • Experience in non-traditional or innovative educational settings (charter, micro-school, Montessori, hybrid)
  • Background in performing, coaching youth sports, or engaging K-2 audiences outside formal reading instruction
