K-12 Learning Coach   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • Dripping Springs, TX (close to Austin): full-time, on-site position
  • $100,000 annual salary, paid weekly; health, dental, and vision coverage begins on day one
  • Relocation assistance provided

The greatest support you can offer a struggling student is maintaining high expectations. If that principle resonates with you — and if you would prefer to demonstrate it by leading a group outdoors rather than discussing it in a classroom — this role warrants your attention.

This position differs fundamentally from traditional teaching. Waypoint Academy students do not sit in rows listening to lectures. Instead, they progress through adaptive learning technology at individualized speeds while you coach them on concentration, perseverance, and objective achievement. You will take them outside for one-hour life-skills workshops addressing public speaking, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving through adventure-based, experiential activities designed to be authentically challenging and engaging. Every session concludes with a Test2Pass mastery check — students must demonstrate the target skill in applied context before completion.

The remainder of your schedule consists of motivation sessions: brief, one-on-one coaching conversations informed by Coachbot analytics, where you engage with students and guide them toward their academic objectives. You will observe students evolve from hesitant learners into self-assured achievers — visibly and rapidly. Your performance metrics are transparent: student satisfaction ratings (90% benchmark) and weekly goal completion (100% benchmark).

High performers advance to senior coaching positions: leading a team and influencing how the school motivates and develops its student body. Beyond that lies complete school ownership — accountability for outcomes, culture, and operations. Dripping Springs sits 30 minutes from Austin's technology sector, live music venues, and culinary scene, offering 300+ days of sunshine annually and year-round Hill Country outdoor recreation.

If you have long believed there is a more effective way to reach young people, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating 1-hour outdoor life-skills workshops (public speaking, focus, leadership, teamwork) using nature-based, adventure-style activities following Waypoint's curriculum and playbook
  • Conducting motivation sessions with individual students, leveraging Coachbot analytics and student profile information to guide them toward weekly academic objectives
  • Completing each workshop with a Test2Pass mastery check: students must demonstrate the targeted life skill in authentic context before the session concludes
  • Exercising outdoor safety judgment prior to every session: evaluating routes and weather, performing gear inspections, and following Leave No Trace principles per Waypoint's field guidelines
  • Enlivening sessions through storytelling, creative adaptation, and the enthusiasm necessary to maintain engagement from a cohort of K-12 learners both indoors and outdoors

What you will NOT be doing

  • Presenting academic lectures or teaching from the front of a classroom. Students acquire course content via adaptive EdTech software; your function is to coach them past obstacles, not deliver curriculum.
  • Supervising students at computer screens. You will be actively leading outdoor workshops, conducting motivation sessions, and coaching students who encounter difficulty.
  • Grading assignments, creating lesson plans from the ground up, or preparing students for standardized testing.
  • Reducing expectations for a student facing challenges. Objectives are meaningful, mastery is the benchmark, and your responsibility is to coach students across the finish line — not relocate it.
  • Handling parent communications or school administrative duties. Those functions are assigned to the Campus Lead.

Key responsibilities

Enable K-12 students at Waypoint Academy to develop enthusiasm for school, accelerate their learning, and acquire enduring life skills.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Minimum 3 years of direct experience working with K-12 students in educational, camp, coaching, or outdoor education environments
  • Documented history of exceptional personal achievement: competitive sports, academic distinction, or elite professional accomplishment
  • Effective public speaker capable of energizing and sustaining attention from large student groups, both indoors and outdoors
  • Innate capacity to relate to K-12 learners as an inspiring role model who challenges them to develop, not as a peer who permits underperformance
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship
  • Available to work in-person at the Waypoint Academy campus located in Dripping Springs, TX (near Austin)

Nice to have

  • Background as an athletic coach, outdoor expedition leader, camp director, or wilderness program instructor
  • First aid or wilderness safety credentials
  • Knowledge of adaptive learning platforms including Khan Academy or IXL
  • Experience in youth development, experiential education, or outdoor youth programming
