Reading Specialist   $60,000 USD/year

Description

You recognize the shift. The instant a learner stops making guesses and begins reading with purpose. They glance up and think, "I've got this." If that's the kind of work you're seeking every day, this could be your place.

Prequel is an online school with a remote-first structure, designed around authentic growth rather than hours logged. We're rethinking student learning so progress accelerates, engagement rises, and students graduate with measurable self-assurance.

In a typical week, you'll facilitate high-impact intervention work. The remainder of your time will go toward brief motivational touchpoints that sustain momentum and goal achievement. This position fits those who value independence, rapid feedback, and visible results. It's not suited to anyone seeking scripted lessons or uncomfortable with numbers.

If you're drawn to helping challenged readers achieve substantial progress—and you want the latitude to customize your methods for each learner—we're ready to connect.

What you will be doing

  • Plan and conduct virtual small-group and individual reading intervention sessions for learners in grades 3–8
  • Apply reading assessment information to address fluency and comprehension deficits and modify instruction promptly
  • Adapt learning activities across varied reading levels, including accommodations for dyslexia and associated reading challenges
  • Monitor student progress in a transparent, systematic manner and apply findings to shape upcoming sessions
  • Facilitate organized motivation check-ins that foster confidence, determination, and pride in development

What you will NOT be doing

  • Deliver large, full-class instruction or present from a static curriculum
  • Execute a pre-written program without responding to individual learner needs and live feedback
  • Serve as a passive "technology supervisor" absent genuine teaching and relationship-building
  • Depend on superficial incentives that fail to cultivate enduring motivation

Key responsibilities

Take ownership of outcomes for grades 3–8—quantifiable improvements in fluency and comprehension—through personalized virtual interventions and motivational support that fosters confidence.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, literacy, or a closely related field
  • Reading intervention certification or endorsement (e.g., Arizona Reading Specialist K-12 or equivalent state certification)
  • Specialized training or certification in dyslexia intervention (or related structured literacy approaches)
  • At least 2 years of experience delivering small-group or one-on-one reading interventions for students in grades 3–8
  • Experience supporting students with dyslexia or related reading difficulties
  • Ability to interpret progress monitoring data and use it to plan and adjust instruction
  • Strong ability to engage and manage students in a virtual setting through clear, motivating communication
  • Full-time availability during U.S. business hours (Monday–Friday; 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. PT)
