Licensing & Permitting Director   $200,000 USD/year

Description

If you've led a school, hospital, or retail build and believed the approval process could move faster and more efficiently, this role is worth your attention.

2 Hour Learning is scaling the fastest school model in the nation. Opening a new school requires authorization—and that means licenses, permits, and regulatory filings must be accurate and expedited. Your role is to determine what's needed, submit everything in proper sequence, and ensure approvals arrive on schedule. You'll leverage AI tools and automation systems, but you'll also engage directly—calling contractors, coordinating with officials, and resolving edge cases that require human judgment.

This position suits individuals who excel under complexity and tight timelines. You'll operate within a high-velocity organization with full resources and support, where rapid execution and uncompromising quality define the standard. You'll deploy AI to streamline bureaucracy, accelerate permit cycles, and deliver operational readiness—not just documentation.

If you're ready to convert "pending approval" into "cleared to open," this is the opportunity.

What you will be doing

  • Aligning architects, contractors, and legal counsel to obtain all necessary construction and educational operation permits.
  • Managing municipal permitting and inspection workflows across multiple jurisdictions—reducing timelines and removing obstacles.
  • Compiling and filing comprehensive approval packages: permits, applications, regulatory submissions, and inspection records.
  • Monitoring project progress and compliance exposure in real time—ensuring full transparency with no unexpected issues.
  • Traveling to project sites (~75%) to engage directly with local authorities, inspectors, and service providers to maintain momentum.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Waiting for others to flag problems or finalize filings—you'll control the full delivery process.
  • Remaining desk-bound throughout the workday—this is a field-focused execution role, not administrative support.
  • Applying a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach across jurisdictions—you'll design custom solutions as needed.
  • Treating delays as unavoidable—velocity and accuracy are core to this position.
  • Depending on outdated systems or manual spreadsheets—you'll be expected to automate and refine continuously.

Key responsibilities

Obtain complete legal and operational authorization to launch schools across jurisdictions more rapidly and thoroughly than conventional permitting methods permit.

Candidate requirements

  • Located in the U.S. with authorization to work without requiring visa sponsorship.
  • Able and willing to travel approximately 75% of the time to U.S. cities and states.
  • 5+ years directing permitting, construction, or facilities expansion initiatives involving physical infrastructure and regulatory clearance.
  • 5+ years coordinating multiple contractors per project across different jurisdictions.
  • Documented history of delivering projects ahead of deadline with full regulatory compliance.
  • Experience delivering progress briefings to technical teams and executive leadership.
  • Clear ownership record—you served as the sole accountable contact for project execution and problem resolution.
  • AI-fluent mindset—you apply automation and rapid iteration to accelerate outcomes.
  • Written communication that is precise, actionable, and relied upon by senior leadership.
  • Strong regulatory discernment—you understand when to escalate, seek clarification, or challenge requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience in construction management, education operations, or multi-location retail rollouts.
  • Background developing or refining AI-driven tools for permitting, compliance, or regulatory processes.
  • Previous collaboration with fire marshals, building inspectors, and educational licensing authorities.
