Senior Director School Operations   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You enter a building and immediately notice what others miss — the ceiling tile that's come loose and hasn't been documented, the HVAC unit that's been making noise for days, the landscaping contractor who completed only half the agreed scope yet submitted a full invoice. You don't wait for complaints to surface. You resolve issues before they're even detected.

That sensibility defines this position. 2 Hour Learning runs high-quality K–12 facilities where families expect an environment that is secure, reliable, and ready for tours every single day — not only when special events are scheduled. You will maintain that standard throughout the Northeast region: Manhattan will serve as your main campus, with frequent travel to schools in CT, MA, and PA. Your efforts determine whether a campus consistently feels premium or quietly deteriorates between leadership visits.

Year one focuses heavily on establishing standards and improving vendor relationships — defining what "tour-ready" means, implementing the audit schedule, replacing underperforming vendors, and training Campus Coordinators and Site Specialists to follow a consistent operational rhythm. As additional schools join the region and your systems mature, the role evolves into ongoing regional operations leadership: you become the operator the organization turns to when launching a new site, managing an urgent situation, or revising an operational standard.

This is a hands-on, field-based role. If you prefer to lead remotely through dashboards, this position isn't the right fit. If you want full accountability for keeping 25+ schools operating at a premium level every day — and the authority to deliver that outcome — continue reading.

What you will be doing

  • Running scheduled on-site inspections across Northeast facilities using documented standards for cleanliness, HVAC systems, safety protocols, security measures, signage, landscaping, furniture condition, and tour-readiness — then ensuring corrective actions are completed and verified
  • Managing facilities incidents and emergencies by coordinating vendor response and closing work orders only after confirming repairs are complete (urgent issues within 24 hours, standard issues within one week)
  • Overseeing local vendor contracts and performance against service-level agreements, terminating consistently underperforming vendors, renegotiating contract terms, and conducting direct accountability discussions regarding quality and costs
  • Implementing a consistent weekly operations rhythm with Campus Coordinators and Site Specialists to ensure every campus follows standardized procedures rather than ad-hoc responses
  • Executing significant campus improvement projects (HVAC system upgrades, interior design updates, landscaping enhancements, AV and network installations) on time and within budget while minimizing student disruption
  • Documenting organization-wide standards and AI-supported procurement procedures (leveraging ticketing platforms, IoT and predictive maintenance tools, and centralized purchasing systems) to ensure uniform campus launches and operations
  • Delivering clear weekly written reports covering regional quality metrics, vendor performance data, escalated issues, and capital expenditure tracking

What you will NOT be doing

  • Operating remotely through dashboards — this position demands frequent on-site presence at the Manhattan location and 20–40% travel time to regional facilities (CT, MA, PA)
  • Leading new campus design or managing ground-up construction projects — capital expansion responsibilities belong to a separate team
  • Developing company-wide procurement policies without field validation — your standards emerge from direct site observations
  • Working within established reporting structures with direct authority over all contributors — you will create accountability through documentation, written follow-through, and refusing to accept ambiguous vendor commitments
  • Treating "tour-ready only during leadership visits" as acceptable — persistent problems receive root cause analysis, not simply repeated tickets
  • Operating in constant reactive firefighting mode — the audit schedule and predictive maintenance systems are designed to identify failures before they generate complaints

Key responsibilities

Maintain every campus across the Northeast region in a safe, premium, and tour-ready condition daily.

Candidate requirements

  • Located in New York City or within commuting range, prepared to work primarily from the Manhattan campus with 20–40% travel to regional sites
  • Authorized to work legally in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship
  • 5+ years managing multi-site facilities, regional operations, hospitality operations, retail operations, or school operations
  • Established history of enforcing vendor accountability for quality standards, cost control, and service-level agreement compliance across multiple sites
  • Hands-on experience addressing urgent facilities problems (safety concerns, HVAC failures, security issues, cleanliness standards) with documented customer experience outcomes
  • Solid written operations discipline: maintaining issue logs, escalation documentation, vendor communications, and weekly regional quality summaries
  • Confirmed experience with contemporary operations platforms (ticketing systems, IoT and predictive maintenance tools, AI-enhanced procurement or planning software)

Nice to have

  • Multi-location operations leadership in premium hospitality, high-end retail, private K–12 education, or healthcare organizations serving demanding clientele
  • Experience building or repairing a regional operations framework that previously depended on individual heroics instead of documented standards
  • History of terminating poorly performing vendors and developing a reliable local vendor network
  • Experience delivering capital improvement projects (HVAC systems, AV and networking infrastructure, landscaping, interior renovations) in active, customer-facing locations
  • Background operating in an AI-driven environment where automated playbooks, dashboards, and predictive tools handle routine tasks so staff can concentrate on decision-making
