Director of Family Engagement   $200,000 USD/year

Description

  • On-site location: Palo Alto, Piedmont, San Francisco, La Jolla (San Diego), or Los Angeles (South Bay), CA
  • Full-time salary · $200,000/yr
  • Benefits include: Health, vision, dental, 401k, PTO, and more

The families you serve don't require additional services. They require someone they trust implicitly.

This position anchors that trust. You will establish yourself as the person families turn to when concerns arise, when they seek clarity, or when they wish to share meaningful developments. Not through obligation—but through credibility you've built. How families experience their child's education at one of five California locations—Palo Alto, Piedmont, downtown San Francisco, La Jolla, or South Bay (Los Angeles)—will be shaped by your presence.

Alpha is constructing a fundamentally different school. Core academics are completed by students in two hours daily through AI-powered platforms, with the remainder of their time dedicated to public speaking, critical thinking, and real-world application. No lectures. No busywork. Nationally ranked top 1% outcomes. Our families are sophisticated, well-counseled, and frequently skeptical. They demand clear reasoning, not rehearsed responses.

You will shepherd that dialogue over the long term. Not only at enrollment, but across multiple years. You will communicate fluently about AI—its mechanics, its shortcomings, and its significance—particularly with families who launch companies, invest in them, or demand precision in every choice. If you cannot sustain that caliber of conversation, this role will prove challenging. If you can, it becomes among the most intellectually rewarding positions in education.

This is not client management. This is enduring trust-building with ultra-high-net-worth families who demand discretion, sound judgment, and reliability. If that setting resonates—and you leverage AI daily to think, write, and execute more efficiently—the opportunity will be immediately apparent.

What you will be doing

  • Take full ownership of every family relationship on campus, cultivating trust that deepens over time
  • Identify concerns early and address them with discretion, efficiency, and solid judgment
  • Sustain strong visibility during critical moments: morning drop-off, afternoon pick-up, and thoughtfully designed parent gatherings
  • Drive ongoing, substantive conversations about Alpha's AI-driven model with highly analytical, technology-oriented families
  • Create and iterate on community experiences that foster belonging, advocacy, and referral activity

What you will NOT be doing

  • Overseeing admissions pipelines or enrollment metrics—your work begins once families are enrolled
  • Operating primarily from behind a desk or through email—this role demands physical presence
  • Using scripts or sidestepping challenging questions about AI or educational philosophy
  • Depending on established processes—you will create systems where none currently exist
  • Viewing families as accounts—this position values judgment over task execution

Key responsibilities

Establish and maintain profound trust with ultra-high-net-worth families, securing long-term retention, advocacy, and belief in Alpha's AI-powered educational approach.

Candidate requirements

  • Located in or capable of daily commuting to Palo Alto, Piedmont, San Francisco, La Jolla, or Los Angeles
  • 5+ years of direct experience working with UHNW individuals or families in contexts such as private schools, private equity, family offices, or premium client service settings
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage complex, high-stakes relationships with discretion and strong judgment
  • Daily, active use of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) with the capability to articulate AI strengths, risks, and boundaries clearly
  • Commanding presence and communication approach that builds credibility with highly educated, demanding families
  • Knowledge of private or independent school environments, gained professionally or personally
  • Flexibility for early morning, late afternoon, and occasional evening or weekend commitments

Nice to have

  • Pre-existing connections within local private school or UHNW networks
  • Background working with founders, investors, or technology executives
  • Proven success in creating communities or experiences that generate organic referrals
  • Experience in early-stage or rapidly growing organizations where ambiguity is prevalent
  • Skill in distilling complex technical ideas into clear, assured dialogue
