Director of Interior Design & Construction   $200,000 USD/year

Description

Certain spaces simply work. You find yourself analyzing why. If you're a designer who grasps both fine-grained detail and overarching systems, who comes alive in physical environments rather than concept boards, and who knows that elegant, high-functioning spaces are scalable, this role channels your intuition into execution.

We are constructing a nationwide footprint of 2 Hour Learning campuses. These locations enable students to complete an entire academic day in two focused hours, then dedicate the remainder to passion projects, capability building, and physical activity. Your responsibility is to make these environments memorable. As the delivery lead for interior environments across our network, you will establish modular frameworks for spatial planning, FF&E, play areas, and navigation. You will guarantee precise implementation at each location. You will visit campuses, identify overlooked issues, define improvement scopes, and shepherd them from budgeting through installation.

This role diverges from conventional design positions by embedding you in the execution. You won't submit plans and disengage. You will be present—correcting the installation, coaching the contractor, and gathering insights that refine subsequent deployments. If you are prepared to elevate your design expertise to national scale, this is the opportunity.

What you will be doing

  • Establish modular, self-service design frameworks for spatial layouts, FF&E, finishes, and play environments that replicate successfully across varied campuses
  • Execute site assessments with standardized evaluation instruments to compare performance against brand criteria and identify high-leverage enhancements
  • Produce detailed, visual, budget-backed proposals for spatial improvements that align with educational philosophy, brand identity, and family-facing experience
  • Supervise contractor performance on-site, maintaining adherence to standards, financial constraints, and schedules through live quality assurance
  • Complete the feedback cycle following installation by recording outcomes, lessons learned, and refining operational guides

What you will NOT be doing

  • Crafting singular, custom environments that resist scaling or duplication.
  • Delivering specifications and disengaging. You own the process from assessment through completion.
  • Delaying action for ideal conditions. This position values proactive decision-making, rapid learning, and confident navigation of uncertainty.
  • Generating unconstrained creative work. Every decision is tightly anchored to brand identity and operational realities.
  • Operating remotely. Expect to be in the field 50-75% of your time.

Key responsibilities

Guarantee that each campus provides a refined, brand-consistent, and pedagogically reinforcing built environment through the development and deployment of scalable modular design systems that maintain high standards.

Candidate requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing and executing multi-location environments in education, retail, hospitality, or co-working
  • Portfolio demonstrating completed projects that harmonize visual quality with operational feasibility
  • Proven track record developing scalable, standards-driven design frameworks, not solely custom installations
  • Hands-on management of contractor delivery, including installation quality control and schedule adherence
  • Excellent documentation capabilities and cross-functional communication proficiency, particularly with non-design collaborators
  • Willing and able to travel frequently, 50-75% of the time, across the U.S.
  • Based in the U.S. and eligible to work without visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Background designing elevated environments with rigorous standards, such as boutique hospitality, luxury retail, or private client spaces
  • Proficiency with spatial documentation platforms like AutoCAD, Revit, Figma, or comparable tools
  • Instinctive understanding of how to deliver a premium spatial experience within constrained budgets
