VP of Space and Design   $200,000 USD/year

Description

Certain spaces simply work. You instinctively want to understand how. If you're a designer who grasps both nuance and system, who operates more effectively in physical environments than on concept boards, and who is convinced that exceptional, practical design can scale, this position channels that perspective into measurable impact.

We are establishing a nationwide network of 2 Hour Learning campuses—environments where students complete a full academic day in two hours of concentrated work, then dedicate the remainder of their time to pursuing interests, developing essential skills, and staying physically active. Your role is to make these environments memorable. As the operational owner of interior design across the network, you will establish modular frameworks for spatial layout, furniture and fixtures, play areas, and navigation. You will ensure flawless implementation at each location. You will visit campuses, identify issues others overlook, define enhancements, and manage them from budgeting through installation.

This role differs from conventional design positions in that you remain embedded in execution. You won't produce drawings and disengage. You will be present—adjusting installations, coaching vendors, and gathering insights that refine subsequent deployments. If you are prepared to translate design expertise into nationwide influence, this opportunity delivers exactly that.

What you will be doing

  • Build modular, repeatable design frameworks for spatial planning, furniture and fixtures, materials, and play environments that function across varied campus contexts
  • Execute site evaluations using standardized assessment tools to compare performance against brand benchmarks and identify high-value enhancements
  • Produce detailed, visual, budget-conscious proposals for facility improvements that align with educational philosophy, brand identity, and family experience
  • Manage vendor implementation on-site, maintaining adherence to design standards, cost parameters, and project schedules through active quality assurance
  • Document post-installation outcomes, capturing lessons learned and integrating findings into operational guides

What you will NOT be doing

  • Creating custom, handcrafted environments that cannot be systematized or reproduced.
  • Delivering specifications and disengaging. You own the entire process from evaluation through completion.
  • Delaying action until conditions are ideal. This position values proactive decision-making, rapid testing, and sound judgment under uncertainty.
  • Generating open-ended creative work without constraints. The output is tightly aligned with brand standards and operational realities.
  • Operating remotely from a desk. Expect to be in the field 50-75% of your time.

Key responsibilities

Guarantee that each campus provides a high-quality, brand-consistent, and educationally effective physical environment through the development and implementation of scalable design frameworks that maintain excellence.

Candidate requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing and executing multi-location environments in education, retail, hospitality, or co-working sectors
  • Portfolio demonstrating completed projects that balance visual refinement with operational feasibility
  • Proven track record developing scalable, standards-driven design frameworks, not solely custom installations
  • Hands-on management of vendor performance, including quality control during installation and schedule adherence
  • Excellent documentation capabilities and communication proficiency with cross-functional partners, particularly those outside the design discipline
  • Prepared and available to travel regularly, 50-75% of the time, throughout the United States
  • Located in the U.S. and authorized to work without requiring visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Background designing premium spaces with rigorous quality expectations, such as boutique hospitality, luxury retail, or high-end residential projects
  • Proficiency with spatial design and documentation platforms such as AutoCAD, Revit, Figma, or comparable tools
  • An intuitive ability to create spaces that convey quality, even within constrained budgets
