Student Engagement Specialist   $100,000 USD/year

Description

Many people in education exhaust themselves battling the system. They draft lesson plans no one ever reads. They attend faculty meetings that produce no real change. You've long since stopped believing that defines the role. The role is about the student right in front of you.

At Alpha, academic instruction is handled by software. Adaptive applications guide each student through subjects at an individualized pace. There are no lectures, no homework assignments, no grading. This frees you to focus on the work that truly transforms lives: facilitating life skill workshops where high schoolers develop public speaking, concentration, and the ability to give and receive feedback—then coaching them individually to maintain motivation and reach their learning milestones. Half your time is spent leading the room. The other half is spent sitting with a student, analyzing their Coachbot data to pinpoint exactly where they're struggling and why.

Students will complete a mastery-based assessment following each workshop. You should receive high ratings from 90%+ of them. 100% of them should be progressing in their applications. These aren't stretch goals; they're the standard. Setting high expectations for students is how you demonstrate your belief in their potential. In the process, you'll develop expertise in designing workshops teenagers are eager to attend, mastering advanced learning software, and forming meaningful relationships with students and their families. Our Brownsville campus is located adjacent to SpaceX. The cutting edge of education converges with the cutting edge of space exploration, and you'll be the one fulfilling Alpha's central promise: students who are passionate about school, learn at twice the speed, and acquire skills that genuinely matter. If you've been looking for a school that functions the way you believe school should function, you've found it.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life skill workshops for high school students covering subjects such as public speaking, focus, and the exchange of feedback, followed by measuring mastery via a structured Test2Pass assessment
  • Conducting daily motivation sessions that leverage Coachbot analytics to engage with individual students, determine where they're encountering obstacles in their learning apps, and help them overcome resistance
  • Co-creating personalized motivational strategies with students, incorporating rewards and incentives that encourage self-directed advancement in their academic applications
  • Examining curriculum and lesson plans prior to each session, then adjusting your delivery based on your assessment of the room

What you will NOT be doing

  • Instructing academic subjects. Math, reading, and all other subjects are delivered through software.
  • Running a school or supervising a team. No budgets, no recruitment, no operational meetings; your complete attention is on your student cohort.
  • Enforcing discipline through conventional authority. No detentions, no suspensions, no "because I said so." You rely on logic and positive reinforcement to cultivate a respectful, energized environment.

Key responsibilities

Develop a cohort of high school students who are passionate about school, learn at 2x speed through adaptive software, and exhibit mastery of practical life skills.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any subject
  • 3+ years of experience working directly with high school students (ages 13-18)
  • Willing to work in-person in Oklahoma City, OK (relocation assistance available)
  • Legal right to work in the US

Nice to have

  • Experience as an athletic coach, camp counselor, or youth program facilitator who has inspired teenagers outside a conventional classroom setting
  • Demonstrated history of guiding groups toward quantifiable objectives (completion rates, performance benchmarks, behavior change)
  • Familiarity with adaptive learning platforms or ed-tech tools
  • Storytelling skills that capture and hold the attention of a room full of teenagers, delivered with cultural awareness and relatability
