Director of Regulatory Operations   $200,000 USD/year

Description

If you've taken a school, hospital, or retail project from concept to ribbon-cutting and wondered, "Why isn't this faster or more efficient?"—you should continue reading.

2 Hour Learning is scaling the fastest-growing school model in the nation. But no school opens until it's approved. Licenses, filings, and permits must be executed correctly and without delay. That's your domain. You'll determine what's needed, sequence every submission, and ensure approvals arrive on schedule. You'll leverage AI systems and automation workflows, but you'll also make calls, coordinate with contractors, and resolve the outlier scenarios automation can't address.

This position suits someone energized by complexity and time pressure. You'll operate in a fast-moving organization with full resources and backing, where velocity is expected and quality is mandatory. You'll deploy AI to streamline red tape, accelerate approval cycles, and deliver results—not just documentation.

If you're ready to be the one who converts "pending approval" into "cleared to open," this role is yours.

What you will be doing

  • Aligning architects, contractors, and legal counsel to obtain all necessary construction and operational education permits.
  • Steering municipal approval and inspection workflows across varying jurisdictions — reducing cycle time and removing obstacles.
  • Assembling and filing complete authorization packages: permits, applications, regulatory submissions, inspection records.
  • Tracking project progress and compliance exposure across all sites — ensuring full transparency and no last-minute issues.
  • Traveling to project locations (~75%) to engage face-to-face with municipal officials, inspectors, and service providers to maintain momentum.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Depending on others to flag problems or finalize submissions — you'll be accountable for complete outcomes.
  • Operating primarily from an office — this is a hands-on, site-based execution role.
  • Applying a fixed, one-size-fits-all approach by jurisdiction — you'll develop custom solutions for unique challenges.
  • Treating delays as unavoidable — delivering quickly and accurately is central to the role.
  • Using outdated systems or spreadsheets — you'll be expected to build automation and continuously improve processes.

Key responsibilities

Obtain complete legal and operational authorization to launch schools across jurisdictions more rapidly and thoroughly than conventional permitting workflows enable.

Candidate requirements

  • Located in the U.S. with authorization to work independently, without need for visa sponsorship.
  • Available and prepared to travel approximately 75% of the time to U.S. cities and states.
  • 5+ years directing permitting, construction, or facilities rollout initiatives that required physical infrastructure and regulatory clearance.
  • 5+ years coordinating multiple contractors per project across different jurisdictions.
  • Documented success delivering projects before deadline while maintaining full regulatory compliance.
  • Experience briefing technical teams and executive leadership on project status.
  • Clear ownership history — you served as the sole point of accountability for delivery and issue resolution.
  • AI-fluent mindset — you default to automation and rapid iteration to accelerate progress.
  • Writing that is precise, actionable, and earns the confidence of senior leadership.
  • Strong regulatory instincts — you understand when to escalate, seek clarity, or challenge requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience in construction management, education operations, or multi-location retail buildouts.
  • History developing or refining AI-driven tools for permitting, compliance, or regulatory coordination.
  • Past engagement with fire marshals, building code inspectors, and education licensing authorities.
