Director of Campus Design   $200,000 USD/year

Description

Certain spaces work instinctively. You naturally want to understand what makes them function. If you're a designer who grasps both granular detail and overarching systems, who finds energy in physical environments rather than concept boards, and who is convinced that elegant, practical spaces can scale effectively, this position channels your abilities directly into meaningful work.

We are establishing a nationwide network of 2 Hour Learning campuses. These are facilities where students complete a full academic day in two focused hours, then dedicate the remainder of their time to passion exploration, life skill development, and physical activity. Your responsibility is to make these locations memorable. As the delivery lead for interior environments throughout our network, you will establish modular frameworks for layout, FF&E, play areas, and wayfinding. You will guarantee precise execution at every location. You will visit campuses, identify overlooked issues, develop upgrade scopes, and oversee implementation from budgeting through installation.

This role differs from traditional design positions by keeping you connected to execution. You won't simply deliver drawings and move on. You will be present, resolving installation challenges, educating vendors, and gathering insights that refine future deployments. If you are prepared to translate your design expertise into nationwide influence, this is the opportunity.

What you will be doing

  • Develop modular, self-service design frameworks for layout, FF&E, materials, and play environments that replicate successfully across varied campuses
  • Perform on-location evaluations using standardized instruments to measure compliance with brand benchmarks and identify high-value enhancements
  • Prepare scoped, visual, budget-defined recommendations for facility improvements that align with pedagogy, brand identity, and family experience
  • Supervise vendor implementation on-site, maintaining adherence to standards, budgets, and schedules through continuous quality verification
  • Complete the feedback cycle after installation by recording successes and failures, then revising documentation and playbooks to reflect learnings

What you will NOT be doing

  • Crafting unique, bespoke environments that resist standardization or replication.
  • Delivering specifications and disengaging. You own the process from assessment through installation.
  • Waiting for complete information. This position values proactive decision-making, rapid prototyping, and sound judgment under uncertainty.
  • Generating design solutions without constraints. The work is tightly aligned with brand identity and operational realities.
  • Operating remotely from a desk. Expect to spend 50-75% of your time in the field.

Key responsibilities

Guarantee that every campus provides a premium, brand-consistent, and pedagogically effective physical environment through the creation and deployment of scalable, modular design systems that maintain quality across all implementations.

Candidate requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing and executing multi-location environments in education, retail, hospitality, or co-working sectors
  • Portfolio showcasing completed projects that harmonize aesthetic excellence with operational feasibility
  • Proven track record developing scalable, standards-driven design frameworks, beyond one-time custom environments
  • Hands-on management of vendor execution, including quality control of installations and adherence to project timelines
  • Excellent documentation capabilities and communication proficiency with cross-functional partners, particularly non-design team members
  • Willing and able to travel extensively, 50-75% of the time, throughout the United States
  • Based in the U.S. and authorized to work without requiring visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Background designing elevated environments with rigorous quality expectations, such as boutique hospitality, luxury retail, or high-end private residential projects
  • Proficiency with spatial documentation tools including AutoCAD, Revit, Figma, or comparable platforms
  • An intuitive ability to create premium spatial experiences even within constrained budgets
