Senior Product Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You'll be stepping into a learning model with verified results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform behind it and is scaling quickly throughout the US and internationally. Students complete their core academic work in two hours daily and achieve top national percentile scores. The approach is validated. What's missing is someone who thinks first about the people using it.

Your role is to establish design excellence, create the standards, and build this capability from the ground up. You'll work across our learning platform and its connected applications, serving multiple distinct audiences within and beyond Alpha.
Consider a five-year-old who hasn't yet learned to read and is discovering numbers through an interface that must transform novelty into playful engagement. Or a teenager performing two grade levels below target, working to restore confidence after repeated academic setbacks—a single unclear interaction could reverse that progress. Then there's a parent who's finally gaining visibility into their child's learning journey. That transparency reduces stress and empowers them as effective partners. Meanwhile, an academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires insight into student progress without information overload. Your challenge is understanding each context deeply enough to make meaningfully distinct design decisions for each.

You own the experience layer: conduct substantial research into each user segment, translate those insights into actionable design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that launch immediately rather than static deliverables awaiting review cycles. You'll collaborate with product leaders accountable for outcomes and engineers responsible for deployment. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You carry full ownership.

AI will amplify your capacity to test more iterations and expand your reach, but your expertise—not algorithmic suggestions—determines what gets released. Your primary focus is our education platform, with selected initiatives in additional areas.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct user research spanning fundamentally different audiences and distill design principles that reflect that understanding
  • Develop and sustain design systems embedded within each product's native UI framework, enabling engineering velocity and ensuring design consistency scales rather than splinters
  • Produce functional prototypes that enable product leaders to validate decisions within days rather than weeks
  • Review deployed products through the user lens: identify experience breakdowns, pinpoint engagement friction, and determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design standards here: structure feedback mechanisms, frame trade-off evaluation, and defend non-negotiable quality bars
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineering teams, advocating against requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Setting product direction; product leaders hold that responsibility, you ensure the experience delivers on it
  • Creating static mockups requiring engineering translation
  • Concentrating on a single product; your scope spans the entire portfolio
  • Waiting for complete design specifications; you synthesize fragmented inputs and begin designing amid uncertainty
  • Requesting approval to act; you possess the mandate to surface and resolve UX issues independently

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, with complete ownership from research through launched product
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor with audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Established design excellence in interaction and visual domains, with portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored decisions over template solutions, supported by well-formed design convictions
  • Confirmed AI-integrated practice: rapid iteration capability, evaluative judgment, and willingness to refine or reject initial AI-generated outputs instead of defaulting to them
  • Capability to convert designs into functional code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Prepared to construct a design function and organizational culture from scratch rather than step into existing systems
