Senior Product Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You'll be joining a proven learning model already delivering measurable outcomes at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform behind it and is scaling rapidly across the US and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and perform in the top national percentiles. The model is validated. What it requires now is someone who spends every day focused on the people within it.

You'll establish design excellence, define standards, and create the function. Your scope covers our learning platform and its companion learning applications, serving diverse audiences both inside and outside Alpha.
A five-year-old who hasn't yet learned to read is discovering numbers through a system that must make discovery feel like play. A teenager performing two grade levels below their age is rebuilding self-belief after repeated setbacks, and a single unclear interaction could undo that progress. A parent gains visibility into their child's actual learning journey. That transparency reduces worry and transforms them into a capable advocate. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom must track progress without information overload. You must understand each group with sufficient depth to make meaningfully distinct choices for every one.

Your responsibility is the experience layer: investigate each audience with genuine rigor, translate insights into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that function immediately, not conceptual mockups awaiting approval. You collaborate with product leaders accountable for results and engineers who deploy production code. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You own the entire process.

You'll employ AI as a force multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, but your expertise, not the tool's initial output, determines what launches. Primary focus remains our education platform, with select projects in additional domains.

What you will be doing

  • Investigate users spanning fundamentally different audiences and develop design principles that reflect that understanding
  • Establish and maintain design systems embedded directly within each product's UI framework so engineering velocity increases and design scales rather than fractures
  • Develop functional prototypes that enable product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products from the user's vantage point: identify experience failures, pinpoint engagement costs, determine high-impact opportunities
  • Establish design culture: how critique operates, how you assess trade-offs, which standards are non-negotiable
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineers, challenge requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Determining product strategy; product leaders own that responsibility, you ensure experience aligns with it
  • Creating static mockups requiring translation into code
  • Concentrating on a single product; you work across the complete portfolio
  • Executing from a design brief; you extract context from ambiguous inputs and begin designing with partial information
  • Requesting authorization; you possess the mandate to identify and resolve UX issues without explicit instruction

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, with complete ownership from research through production launch
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor across audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Established design excellence in interaction and visual design, with a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored decisions rather than standard patterns, combined with well-defined design convictions
  • Confirmed AI-native approach: rapid iteration, discerning judgment, and willingness to reject initial AI output rather than accepting defaults
  • Capability to convert designs into code leveraging AI tools and current frameworks
  • Confident establishing a design function and culture from the ground up, not inheriting existing processes
