Senior UX Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You'll be stepping into a validated educational model already delivering measurable impact at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform beneath it, scaling rapidly across the United States and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and score in the nation's top percentiles. The model is effective. What it requires now is someone who begins each day focused on the people it serves.

You'll establish design excellence, create the standards, and construct the function. Your domain includes our learning platform and its associated learning applications, serving varied audiences both within and beyond Alpha.
A five-year-old who hasn't learned to read yet approaches counting through a system that must transform novelty into play. A teenager performing two grades below level is reconstructing confidence following years of academic struggle, where a single unclear interaction could reverse their progress. A parent gains visibility into their child's actual learning process. This transparency reduces their concern and transforms them into an effective partner. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires progress visibility without information overload. You must understand each group thoroughly enough to make authentically distinct design decisions for each.

Your responsibility is the experience layer: conduct deep research into each audience, translate your findings into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that function immediately, not conceptual mockups awaiting review cycles. You collaborate with product leaders accountable for outcomes and engineers responsible for shipping code. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You maintain complete ownership.

You'll leverage AI to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, but your judgment—not the model's initial output—determines what ships. Primary focus remains our education platform, with periodic projects in additional domains.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct user research spanning fundamentally different audience segments and construct design principles reflecting that understanding
  • Develop and sustain design systems embedded within each product's native UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and compounding design value rather than fragmentation
  • Produce functional prototypes enabling product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products from the user's viewpoint: identify experience breakdowns, diagnose engagement costs, determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design culture: feedback mechanisms, trade-off evaluation frameworks, non-negotiable standards
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineers, challenging requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Setting product strategy; product leaders retain that ownership, you ensure experience alignment
  • Creating static mockups requiring code translation
  • Focusing on a single product; your scope encompasses the complete portfolio
  • Executing against a design brief; you extract context from ambiguous inputs and begin design work with partial information
  • Requesting authorization; you possess the mandate to identify and resolve UX issues independently

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through production delivery
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor across audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Established design craft in interaction and visual design, with a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored choices over generic patterns, combined with well-defined design convictions
  • Verified AI-native workflow: rapid iteration, critical assessment, and willingness to challenge initial AI output instead of accepting defaults
  • Capability to convert designs into code using AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Prepared to establish a design function and culture from the ground up, not inherit existing processes
