Senior UX Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You're joining a learning model that has already demonstrated measurable impact at Alpha School. LearnWithAI operates the platform powering this model, scaling rapidly throughout the US and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and consistently score in the nation's top percentiles. The approach is validated. What's missing is someone who thinks constantly about the people using it.

You'll establish design excellence, create the standards, and construct the function from the ground up. Your domain includes our learning platform and its ecosystem of learning applications, serving diverse user groups both within Alpha and externally.
Consider a five-year-old who hasn't learned to read, discovering numbers through an interface where discovery must feel effortless and engaging. Picture a teenager working two grade levels below their peers, reconstructing self-belief after repeated academic setbacks—a single unclear interaction could reverse their progress. Imagine a parent finally understanding their child's learning journey. That transparency reduces worry and transforms them into an active partner. Think about an academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom who requires visibility into student advancement without information overload. You must understand each user deeply enough to design fundamentally different experiences for each.

Your domain is the experience layer: investigate each user group with rigor, translate insights into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that deploy immediately rather than static designs awaiting approval. You collaborate with product leaders accountable for results and engineers responsible for delivery. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You own the complete cycle.

You'll employ AI as a multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand your reach, but your expertise—not automated suggestions—determines what launches. Your primary focus is our education platform, with intermittent work in additional domains.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct user research spanning fundamentally distinct audiences and develop design principles that reflect that understanding
  • Establish and sustain design systems within each product's native UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and cumulative design value rather than fragmentation
  • Develop functional prototypes that enable product leaders to validate decisions within days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience failures, quantify engagement costs, and determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design culture: structure feedback mechanisms, define trade-off evaluation frameworks, and identify non-negotiable standards
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineering teams, challenging requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Determining product strategy; product leaders retain that ownership, you ensure experience aligns with it
  • Creating static mockups requiring code translation
  • Focusing on a single product; you work across the entire portfolio
  • Executing against a design brief; you synthesize context from ambiguous sources and begin designing with partial information
  • Requesting approval; you possess the mandate to surface and resolve UX issues independently

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through production release
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor with audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Documented design excellence in interaction and visual design, with portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored decisions over generic solutions, supported by well-articulated design perspectives
  • Verified AI-integrated workflow: rapid iteration capability, critical evaluation skills, and willingness to reject initial AI-generated output when warranted
  • Capability to convert designs into functional code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Prepared to establish a design function and culture from inception rather than operating within existing structures
