Senior UX Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You're stepping into an established learning model already delivering measurable results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform beneath it, scaling rapidly throughout the US and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and achieve top national percentile scores. The system is validated. What it requires now is someone who consistently thinks about the people within it.

You'll establish design excellence standards, define what quality means, and construct the function. Your domain encompasses our learning platform and its complementary learning applications, serving diverse audiences both inside and outside Alpha.
A five-year-old who cannot yet read is learning to count through a system that must transform novelty into play. A teenager performing two grade levels below target is reconstructing confidence following years of academic struggle, where a single confusing interaction could reverse progress. A parent finally understands how their child truly learns. This transparency reduces anxiety and transforms them into an effective advocate. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires visibility into progress without information overload. You must understand each audience thoroughly enough to make fundamentally different design decisions for each.

Your role centers on the experience layer: investigate each audience with substantive depth, translate findings into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-based outputs ready for immediate deployment—not mockups awaiting review cycles. You collaborate with product leaders accountable for outcomes and engineers responsible for shipping. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You own the complete cycle.

You'll employ AI as a force multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, though your judgment—not the model's initial output—determines what ships. Primary focus remains our education platform, supplemented by occasional cross-domain projects.

What you will be doing

  • Investigate users spanning fundamentally different audiences and construct design principles reflecting that understanding
  • Establish and sustain design systems within each product's native UI framework, enabling engineering velocity and ensuring design scales rather than fragments
  • Develop functional prototypes allowing product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience failures, quantify engagement costs, determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design culture standards: feedback mechanisms, trade-off evaluation frameworks, non-negotiable quality bars
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineering teams, challenging requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Setting product strategy; product leaders retain ownership, you ensure experiences align with it
  • Generating static mockups requiring code translation
  • Focusing on a single product; your scope spans the entire portfolio
  • Executing against a design brief; you synthesize context from fragmented inputs and begin designing despite information gaps
  • Waiting for authorization; you possess authority to surface and resolve UX issues independently

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through production release
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor across audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Verified design expertise in interaction and visual design, with a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored decisions over generic solutions, combined with articulated design convictions
  • Proven AI-native approach: rapid iteration capability, critical evaluation skills, and willingness to reject initial AI output rather than defaulting to acceptance
  • Capability to convert designs into functional code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Confident establishing a design function and culture from inception, rather than operating within existing frameworks
