Principal Software Engineer   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • Remote · Contractor · $50/hr

This position is designed for elite engineers who excel at ownership, strategic technical leadership, and solving demanding engineering problems. You will be responsible for developing the product's most critical features while defining its technical trajectory and maintaining its long-term reliability and scalability. The technical choices you make will have a direct effect on the product and its end users, granting you both the freedom to innovate and the accountability to execute.

Our products are reshaping how learning happens:

  • TeachTap: Uses AI to animate historical figures within a TikTok-style educational platform.
  • TeachTales: Captivates learners through personalized, immersive storytelling designed to improve comprehension.
  • TimeBack: Functions as an intelligent learning companion that connects with existing applications to coach students in real time.
  • Athena: Delivers proven academic results through AI-created videos and assessments.

Your role will be to guide the technical advancement of these products, making them scalable, maintainable, and engineered for sustained success. Working in close partnership with product teams, you will convert high-level objectives into concrete technical architectures and navigate intricate challenges while upholding rigorous quality benchmarks. The decisions you make will determine the product's trajectory and affect how thousands of students engage with learning.

We emphasize deliberate planning and upfront architectural design. By adopting an AI-first methodology, we automate repetitive work, allowing you to concentrate on decisions and problems that truly matter. You will operate with significant autonomy and have meaningful influence over product strategy, always with an eye toward long-term stability and scale.

If you are prepared to spearhead the technical transformation of SaaS products and harness generative AI to redefine what's possible, we want to connect with you.

What you will be doing

  • Feature Development: Architecting and building new capabilities with an emphasis on scalability, maintainability, and sustained product value.
  • Requirement Engineering: Partnering with product leadership to clarify requirements and guiding technical conversations to ensure features align with strategic goals.
  • Operations and Maintenance: Overseeing product stability through monitoring, performance optimization, and proactive identification and resolution of issues.
  • Technical Design: Driving high-stakes technical decisions that directly shape user experience and product scalability.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Jumping between short-lived projects or pursuing the latest technology fads.
  • Supporting internal IT infrastructure or contract work disconnected from real users.
  • Sitting through excessive meetings or troubleshooting tedious infrastructure problems.

Candidate requirements

  • At least 1 year of full-stack development experience, working on front and backend features.
  • At least 2 years as the primary technical contributor for a SaaS product, driving strategic technical decisions.
  • At least 4 years of experience working on actual SaaS products, not outsourcing or internal IT projects.
  • Experience in using generative AI in your day-to-day development work.
