Technical Team Lead   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to ensure quality and timely delivery across our application-level products. In this role, you will guide a compact team of 3-5 engineers developing educational applications utilized by thousands of students.

Potential products include:

  • Athena: AI-powered video and test generation that produces measurable academic results
  • TeachTap: An AI-driven platform that brings historical figures to life through a TikTok-style learning interface
  • TeachTales: Customized, engaging storytelling designed to enhance comprehension
  • TrashCat: A gamified approach to learning that makes education enjoyable and interactive

This position blends individual contribution with leadership: you will dedicate 50% of your time to hands-on development of sophisticated features and 50% to coaching and empowering your team. You will define quality expectations, establish coding patterns, provide instructional code reviews, and support engineer development. Accountability extends to team performance, not solely your personal output.

Expect a lean team structure, substantial ownership, and minimal administrative overhead. Your focus is technical leadership; people management is handled separately.

What you will be doing

  • Developing sophisticated features that serve as reference implementations for your team
  • Conducting pull request reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through pair programming and constructive feedback
  • Organizing technical workstreams and decomposing product requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and ensuring adherence across the team

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling personnel management (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, or career development discussions)
  • Contributing to platform-level infrastructure projects
  • Spending time in prolonged or excessive meetings
  • Designing architecture in isolation without hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • At least 2 years serving in a lead capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring engineers, defining team practices)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products to production
  • Practical experience integrating AI tools into development workflows
  • Demonstrated capability in fostering the improvement and growth of fellow engineers
