Engineering Lead   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to oversee delivery and quality across our application-layer products. In this position, you will manage a compact team of 3-5 engineers responsible for developing educational applications that serve thousands of students.

Example products in your scope:

  • Athena: AI-powered video and assessment generation producing quantifiable learning gains
  • TeachTap: AI-driven platform recreating historical personalities within a TikTok-style educational interface
  • TeachTales: Customized storytelling experiences designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning platform that makes education entertaining and immersive

This position combines individual contribution with leadership: you will spend 50% of your time implementing sophisticated features and 50% coaching and empowering your team members. Your responsibilities include defining quality standards, establishing technical patterns, conducting code reviews with an instructional focus, and supporting engineer development. You own team results, not solely your individual output.

Compact team structure, substantial ownership, minimal overhead. Your focus is technical leadership; people management responsibilities rest elsewhere.

What you will be doing

  • Implementing sophisticated features that establish technical standards for the team
  • Conducting pull request reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through pair programming and targeted feedback
  • Orchestrating technical execution and decomposing project requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and enforcing adherence across the team

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling personnel management (recruiting, terminations, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Contributing to platform-layer infrastructure initiatives
  • Attending excessive meeting schedules
  • Designing architecture without hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • Minimum 2 years in a leadership capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring developers, defining team standards)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products to market
  • Practical experience integrating AI tools into development processes
  • Verifiable success in elevating the skills and performance of fellow engineers
