Engineering Team Lead   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to ensure quality and timely delivery across our application-level products. In this role, you will guide a compact team of 3-5 engineers developing educational applications that serve thousands of students.

Examples of products in your portfolio may include:

  • Athena: AI-powered video and assessment generation that produces measurable learning gains
  • TeachTap: AI-driven platform bringing historical personalities to life through a TikTok-style educational interface
  • TeachTales: Customized storytelling experiences designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning that transforms education into an engaging and enjoyable experience

This position combines individual contribution with leadership: you will spend approximately 50% of your time building sophisticated features yourself, and 50% mentoring and empowering your team members. You define quality expectations, create technical patterns, conduct code reviews with an instructional approach, and support engineer development. Accountability extends to the collective output of your team, not solely your personal contributions.

Expect a lean team structure with substantial ownership and minimal administrative overhead. You provide technical direction; people management responsibilities rest elsewhere.

What you will be doing

  • Developing sophisticated features that establish technical standards for the team
  • Conducting pull request reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through pair programming and constructive feedback
  • Organizing technical initiatives and decomposing project requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and verifying team adherence

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling personnel management (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Contributing to platform-level infrastructure projects
  • Attending excessive or unproductive meetings
  • Designing architecture without hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • At least 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • At least 2 years in a lead role (reviewing others' work, mentoring engineers, establishing team practices)
  • Track record of shipping SaaS products
  • Experience with AI tools in development workflow
  • Demonstrated ability to help other engineers improve and grow
