Engineering Team Lead   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to oversee quality and delivery for our application-level products. In this role, you will guide a compact team of 3-5 engineers developing educational applications that serve thousands of students.

Potential products include:

  • Athena: AI-powered videos and assessments that produce quantifiable learning results
  • TeachTap: AI-driven platform reviving historical figures through a TikTok-inspired educational format
  • TeachTales: Customized, immersive storytelling designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning that transforms education into an enjoyable, interactive experience

This position operates as a player-coach model: approximately 50% dedicated to hands-on development of sophisticated features, and 50% focused on mentoring and empowering your team members. You will define quality expectations, create technical patterns, conduct code reviews with instructional emphasis, and support engineer development. Team performance is your responsibility, extending beyond individual contribution.

Lean team structure, substantial ownership, minimal administrative overhead. Your leadership is technical in nature; people management functions are handled separately.

What you will be doing

  • Developing sophisticated features that establish technical standards for your team
  • Conducting PR reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through collaborative pairing sessions and constructive feedback
  • Organizing technical workstreams and decomposing feature requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and ensuring team adherence

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling people management duties (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Contributing to platform-level infrastructure projects
  • Attending excessive or unproductive meetings
  • Designing architecture in isolation from hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • Minimum 2 years in a leadership capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring developers, defining team standards)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products to market
  • Practical experience integrating AI tools into development processes
  • Verified capability to facilitate engineer skill development and professional growth
