Lead Software Engineer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to ensure quality and timely delivery across our application-level products. In this role, you will oversee a compact team of 3-5 engineers developing educational applications that serve thousands of students.

Potential products in your portfolio:

  • Athena: AI-powered video and assessment generation delivering quantifiable learning results
  • TeachTap: AI-driven platform bringing historical personalities to life through a TikTok-style educational interface
  • TeachTales: Customized, immersive storytelling designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning platform that makes education enjoyable and interactive

This position balances technical execution with team enablement: approximately 50% of your time will involve hands-on development of sophisticated features, while the remaining 50% focuses on mentoring and empowering your engineers. You will define quality expectations, create reusable patterns, conduct code reviews with an educational emphasis, and support professional development. Your accountability extends to collective team results rather than solely individual contributions.

Expect a lean team structure with substantial ownership and minimal administrative overhead. Your leadership is technical in nature; people management responsibilities rest elsewhere.

What you will be doing

  • Developing sophisticated features that establish technical patterns for the team to follow
  • Conducting pull request reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through pair programming sessions and constructive feedback
  • Orchestrating technical initiatives and decomposing product requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and verifying team adherence

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling people management duties (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, career planning discussions)
  • Developing platform-layer infrastructure components
  • Attending excessive or unproductive meetings
  • Designing architecture in isolation from actual implementation

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • Minimum 2 years in a technical leadership capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring developers, defining team standards)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products to market
  • Practical experience integrating AI tools into development processes
  • Confirmed capability in elevating the skills and performance of fellow engineers
