Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational systems that enable other teams to build efficiently. Your role centers on platform-level products where architectural patterns, API design choices, and technical documentation directly influence how multiple development teams operate.
Platform products under your scope may include:
- TimeBack: Educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
- Incept: Content generation platform producing personalized educational materials for various learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform handling tens of thousands of candidate applications each month
- This position emphasizes design work: 50% creating specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% building sophisticated platform capabilities; 20% code review and technical guidance. You hold technical authority on architectural choices. Once aligned with the team, your specifications become binding.
Compact team of capable engineers, substantial ownership, minimal bureaucracy. You architect it, you implement it, you maintain it.
What you will be doing
- Authoring specifications prior to development kickoff
- Crafting APIs designed for backward compatibility and future extensibility
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) complete with supporting rationale
- Implementing sophisticated platform capabilities
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or personnel management
- Development on straightforward application-level products
- Attending continuous rounds of meetings
- Purely theoretical architecture without hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
- Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
- Experience with AI tools in development workflow
