Description

We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational systems upon which other teams develop. In this capacity, you will focus on platform-level products where your architectural patterns, API design choices, and technical documentation define how multiple teams execute their work.

Potential products include:

  • TimeBack: Educational platform supporting Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
  • Incept: Content generation platform producing personalized educational content for various learning applications
  • Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform handling tens of thousands of applicants monthly
  • This position emphasizes design: 50% authoring specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% building complex platform capabilities; 20% conducting reviews and providing guidance. You hold technical authority for architectural choices. Once team alignment is achieved, your specifications become binding.

Lean team of capable engineers, substantial ownership, zero bureaucracy. You architect it, you implement it, you maintain it.

What you will be doing

  • Authoring specifications prior to development
  • Architecting APIs with extensibility and backward compatibility
  • Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) with supporting rationale
  • Implementing complex platform capabilities
  • Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural alignment

What you will NOT be doing

  • Extensive team leadership or personnel management
  • Development on straightforward app-level products
  • Participating in continuous meetings
  • Pure architectural work with no hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience
  • At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
  • Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
  • Experience with AI tools in development workflow
