Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational infrastructure upon which other teams construct their solutions. In this role, you will focus on platform-level products where your architectural patterns, API design choices, and technical documentation directly influence how multiple teams execute their development efforts.
Platform products in our portfolio include:
- TimeBack: Educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (achieving 99th percentile test outcomes)
- Incept: Content generation platform that produces personalized educational materials for various learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform that handles tens of thousands of applicants each month
- This position emphasizes design work: 50% of your time will be spent authoring specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% will involve implementing sophisticated platform capabilities; 20% will be dedicated to reviewing work and providing architectural guidance. You will hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once team alignment is reached, your specifications become binding.
Expect a compact team of capable peers, substantial ownership, and minimal bureaucracy. You design the systems, you implement them, and you maintain ownership.
What you will be doing
- Authoring specifications prior to any implementation work
- Designing APIs that maintain backward compatibility and support future extensibility
- Documenting Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) along with supporting rationale
- Implementing sophisticated platform features
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural consistency
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or managing people
- Building simple application-level products
- Participating in excessive meetings
- Pure architectural work detached from implementation
Candidate requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
- Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
- Experience with AI tools in development workflow
