Description
We are seeking Senior Platform Engineers to architect the foundational systems that enable other engineering teams to build effectively. Your work will focus on platform-level products where the API contracts you define, the architectural patterns you establish, and the technical documentation you produce will directly influence how multiple teams develop their solutions.
Platform products in scope:
- TimeBack: Educational platform that supports Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (achieving 99th percentile test outcomes)
- Incept: Content generation platform that produces personalized educational materials for various learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform that processes tens of thousands of candidates each month
- This role emphasizes design: 50% dedicated to producing specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% spent implementing sophisticated platform capabilities; 20% allocated to code review and technical guidance. You hold technical authority on architectural choices. Once the team aligns, your specifications become binding.
Lean team of capable engineers, direct ownership, minimal process overhead. You design the system, implement it, and own the outcomes.
What you will be doing
- Producing technical specifications prior to development work
- Crafting APIs that support backward compatibility and future extensibility
- Authoring Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) that include clear reasoning
- Implementing sophisticated platform capabilities
- Conducting pull request reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Leading teams or managing personnel
- Developing straightforward application-level products
- Attending prolonged, unproductive meetings
- Performing architecture work without hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- Minimum of 5 years in professional software development
- At least 2 years of experience designing systems where other engineering teams used your APIs or relied on your architectural choices
- Demonstrated history of producing technical specifications or technical decisions that were implemented by others
- Practical experience incorporating AI tools into your development process
