Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to build the foundational systems that enable other teams to succeed. In this role, your architectural patterns, API design choices, and technical documentation will directly influence how multiple teams approach development.
Platform products you may contribute to:
- TimeBack: Educational platform supporting Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
- Incept: Content generation platform producing personalized educational content across multiple learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform handling tens of thousands of applicants monthly
- This role emphasizes design: 50% authoring specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% building complex platform features; 20% code review and technical guidance. You hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once team alignment is achieved, your specifications become binding.
You will work with a small team of capable engineers, enjoy high autonomy, and operate without bureaucratic overhead. You design, build, and own your work.
What you will be doing
- Authoring technical specifications prior to development
- Creating APIs designed for backward compatibility and future extensibility
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) with clear reasoning
- Implementing complex platform-level functionality
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Managing people or leading large teams
- Developing straightforward application-level products
- Attending excessive meetings
- Designing architecture without hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
- Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
- Experience with AI tools in development workflow
