Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational systems upon which other teams develop. In this role, you will focus on platform-level products, where your architectural patterns, API design choices, and documentation directly influence how multiple teams build and integrate their work.
Potential products in your scope:
- TimeBack: An educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (achieving 99th percentile test outcomes)
- Incept: A content generation platform that produces personalized educational material for various learning applications
- Crossover: An AI-powered hiring platform that handles tens of thousands of applicants each month
- This position is design-intensive: 50% of your time will be dedicated to writing specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% to implementing complex platform capabilities; and 20% to reviewing work and providing guidance to others. You will hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once aligned with the team, your specifications become binding.
You will work within a small team of skilled peers, with high ownership and minimal bureaucracy. You design it, you build it, you own it.
What you will be doing
- Authoring specifications prior to implementation kickoff
- Creating APIs with backward compatibility and extensibility in mind
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) along with their justifications
- Developing complex platform capabilities
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or people management responsibilities
- Developing straightforward app-level products
- Attending endless meeting cycles
- Engaging in pure architecture work without hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years of experience designing systems in which other teams relied on your APIs or architectural decisions
- Proven history of authoring technical specifications or technical decisions that were executed by others
- Practical experience integrating AI tools into your development workflow
