Description

We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational systems upon which other teams construct their solutions. Your work will focus on platform-tier products where the APIs you define, the architectural patterns you select, and the documentation you produce will influence how numerous teams develop their applications.

Example products in scope:

  • TimeBack: An educational platform that drives Alpha School's 2-hour learning methodology (achieving 99th percentile test outcomes)
  • Incept: A content generation platform that produces tailored educational material for diverse learning applications
  • Crossover: An AI-driven hiring platform that handles tens of thousands of candidate applications each month
  • This role is design-intensive: you will allocate 50% of your time to authoring specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% to developing sophisticated platform capabilities; and 20% to reviewing code and providing architectural guidance. You hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once alignment is reached with the team, your specifications become binding.

A compact team of capable peers, substantial ownership, and minimal bureaucracy. You design, you implement, you maintain.

What you will be doing

  • Authoring specifications prior to implementation kickoff
  • Creating APIs with a focus on backward compatibility and future extensibility
  • Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) along with their justifications
  • Developing sophisticated platform capabilities
  • Conducting pull request reviews to ensure architectural alignment

What you will NOT be doing

  • Extensive team leadership or personnel management duties
  • Engagement with straightforward application-level products
  • Spending time in continuous meetings
  • Theoretical architecture work divorced from hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience
  • A minimum of 2 years designing systems in which other teams integrated your APIs or relied upon your architectural choices
  • Demonstrated history of producing technical specifications or technical decisions that were executed by others
  • Practical experience incorporating AI tools into your development process
