Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational architecture that serves as the basis for development across multiple teams. In this role, your decisions around APIs, architectural patterns, and technical documentation will directly influence how various teams approach their work.
Examples of products in scope:
- TimeBack: An educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
- Incept: A content generation platform that produces personalized educational materials for various learning applications
- Crossover: An AI-powered hiring platform that handles tens of thousands of applicants each month
- This role is design-intensive: 50% dedicated to writing specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% focused on implementing sophisticated platform features; 20% allocated to reviewing work and providing guidance. You will hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once aligned with the team, your specifications become binding.
Expect a small team of capable peers, significant ownership, and minimal bureaucracy. You design it, you implement it, you maintain it.
What you will be doing
- Authoring specifications prior to any implementation work
- Crafting APIs that prioritize backward compatibility and extensibility
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) complete with supporting rationale
- Implementing sophisticated platform capabilities
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or managing people
- Developing straightforward app-level products
- Spending time in prolonged meetings
- Engaging in architecture work detached from hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years spent designing systems in which other teams utilized your APIs or relied on your architectural decisions
- Demonstrated history of producing technical specifications or technical decisions that were executed by others
- Practical experience integrating AI tools into your development workflow
