Senior UX Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You'll be joining a validated learning system that's already delivering measurable results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform behind it and is scaling rapidly throughout the US and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and score in the top national percentiles. The approach is proven. What's required now is someone who thinks constantly about the people using it.

Your role will be to establish what exemplary design means, create the standards, and develop the capability. You'll focus on our learning platform and its related applications, serving multiple audiences both within and outside Alpha.
A five-year-old who can't yet read is learning numbers through a system that must present novelty as play. A teenager performing two grades below level is restoring confidence after prolonged academic struggle, and a single unclear interaction could reverse that progress. A parent gains visibility into their child's actual learning process. This transparency reduces their worry and empowers them as advocates. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires insight into advancement without information overload. You must understand each group deeply enough to make genuinely distinct decisions for them.

You're responsible for the experience layer: investigate each audience with genuine rigor, translate findings into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that function immediately—not static mockups awaiting approval. You'll collaborate with product leaders who control outcomes and engineers who deploy solutions. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You take complete ownership.

You'll employ AI to accelerate iteration and expand capacity, but your judgment—not the model's initial output—determines what launches. Primary attention goes to our education platform, with selective work in other areas.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct user research spanning entirely different audience segments and develop design principles that reflect that understanding
  • Develop and sustain design systems within each product's native UI framework so engineering accelerates delivery and design scales rather than fractures
  • Produce functional prototypes that enable product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
  • Review existing products through the user's lens: identify experience breakdowns, pinpoint engagement obstacles, determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design culture within the organization: structure feedback processes, clarify trade-off evaluation methods, determine which standards are non-negotiable
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineers, challenge requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Setting product strategy; product leaders retain that responsibility, you ensure the experience enables it
  • Creating static mockups requiring conversion to code
  • Focusing on a single product; you work across the entire portfolio
  • Executing from a design brief; you extract context from ambiguous inputs and begin designing with partial information
  • Requesting authorization; you possess the autonomy to detect and resolve UX issues without waiting for direction

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, with complete ownership spanning research through launched experience
  • Clear demonstration of user empathy and research rigor across audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Established design excellence in interaction and visual design, with a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored decisions instead of standard patterns, combined with well-defined design convictions
  • Verified AI-native approach: rapid iteration, discerning evaluation, and capacity to reject initial AI output rather than defaulting to acceptance
  • Capability to convert designs into code leveraging AI tools and current frameworks
  • Prepared to construct a design function and culture from the ground up, not stepping into existing systems
