Lead Product Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You're stepping into a learning model already delivering measurable results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform beneath it, scaling rapidly across the United States and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and achieve top national percentile scores. The approach is validated. What's required now is someone who thinks constantly about the people within the system.

You will establish design excellence, create standards, and develop the capability. Your domain includes our learning platform and related learning applications, serving varied audiences both within Alpha and externally.
A five-year-old who hasn't yet learned to read is discovering numbers through a system that must present novelty as play. An adolescent operating two grade levels below target is reconstructing confidence following years of academic setbacks, where a single unclear interaction could reverse progress. A parent gains visibility into their child's actual learning process. That transparency reduces worry and enables them to provide meaningful support. An academic coach overseeing a mixed-age classroom requires insight into advancement without being overwhelmed by information. You must comprehend each context sufficiently to make authentically distinct decisions for each user.

Your responsibility is the experience layer: investigate each audience with genuine rigor, translate findings into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that function immediately—not conceptual designs awaiting review. You collaborate with product leaders accountable for outcomes and engineers responsible for deployment. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You maintain complete ownership.

You will employ AI as a force multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, though your judgment—not the model's initial output—determines what launches. Primary emphasis remains our education platform, with periodic work in additional domains.

What you will be doing

  • Investigate users spanning fundamentally distinct audiences and develop design principles reflecting that understanding
  • Establish and sustain design systems within each product's native UI framework, enabling engineering velocity while ensuring design scales coherently rather than fragmenting
  • Develop functional prototypes allowing product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience breakdowns, engagement obstacles, and high-impact improvement opportunities
  • Establish design culture: structure feedback processes, articulate trade-off evaluation methods, and identify non-negotiable standards
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineers, challenging requests that degrade user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Determining product strategy; product leaders retain that ownership, you ensure experience aligns with it
  • Creating static mockups requiring code translation
  • Focusing on a single product; you work across the complete portfolio
  • Executing against a design brief; you synthesize context from fragmented inputs and begin design work with partial information
  • Requesting authorization; you possess the mandate to detect and resolve UX issues independently

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through launched experience
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor across audiences distinct from yourself
  • Validated design expertise in interaction and visual design, with a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored solutions over generic approaches, combined with well-articulated design perspectives
  • Proven AI-integrated workflow: rapid iteration capability, critical evaluation skills, and willingness to challenge initial AI-generated output instead of defaulting to acceptance
  • Capability to convert designs into code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Prepared to construct a design function and culture from the ground up, not adopt existing processes
