Description

We're scaling platforms that thousands of students and teams depend on:

  • TimeBack: Educational platform powering Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results).
  • Incept: Content generation platform creating all personalized educational content for multiple learning applications used at Alpha School.
  • Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform processing tens of thousands of applicants per month, staffing schools and companies globally.

You'll own one of these platforms and spend most of your time building the complex parts of the codebase alongside a small team (3-5 strong engineers, no juniors). Your architecture decisions determine whether other teams can rapidly build new apps, integrate cleanly, and add value to students. Get this right and you enable massive leverage. The wrong decisions create integration nightmares and kill velocity across multiple teams.


You build and operate what you design. You establish quality bars and patterns for your platform. We're spec-driven: you design before you implement, always plan before you build. High autonomy, no committees, no review boards. Small tight-knit team, where you're accountable for what you ship.

What you will be doing

  • Technical Leadership: Make strategic architectural decisions and establish technical patterns for the team to follow.
  • AI Leadership: Drive adoption of new AI workflows and create high-impact playbooks.
  • Implementation: Build the complex, high-stakes parts of the codebase alongside your team.
  • Quality Reviews: Ensure your team follows established patterns and maintains quality standards.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Playing architect without implementing
  • Getting stuck in endless meetings
  • Managing people (this is a technical leadership role, not a people management function)
  • Working on legacy maintenance or internal IT systems

Candidate requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience building software products
  • At least 3 years as either a lead engineer (reviewing others' work) or architect (making key technical decisions)
  • Experience working on platform-level products where other teams consumed your APIs
  • Deep engagement with AI tools, actively experimenting and pushing boundaries
