Description

We are expanding platforms that serve thousands of students and teams globally:

  • TimeBack: An educational platform that supports Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (achieving 99th percentile test scores).
  • Incept: A content generation platform responsible for producing all personalized educational materials for multiple learning applications deployed at Alpha School.
  • Crossover: An AI-driven hiring platform that processes tens of thousands of candidates monthly, supplying talent to schools and organizations worldwide.

You will take ownership of one platform and dedicate the majority of your time to constructing the most complex components of the codebase with a compact team (3-5 senior engineers, no junior developers). The architectural choices you make will define whether other teams can build new applications quickly, integrate seamlessly, and deliver value to students. Execute these decisions well and you unlock significant leverage. Poor choices generate integration chaos and slow down multiple teams.


You design, build, and operate the systems you architect. You set quality standards and define technical patterns for your platform. We follow a spec-driven approach: design precedes implementation, planning comes before building. You will have high autonomy with no committees or review boards. This is a small, focused team where you are directly accountable for your deliverables.

What you will be doing

  • Technical Leadership: Drive strategic architectural choices and define technical patterns that guide the team's work.
  • AI Leadership: Champion the adoption of emerging AI workflows and develop high-impact playbooks.
  • Implementation: Construct the complex, mission-critical sections of the codebase working closely with your team.
  • Quality Reviews: Verify that your team adheres to established patterns and upholds quality standards.

What you will NOT be doing

  • Serving as an architect who only designs without writing code
  • Spending excessive time in meetings
  • Managing people (this role focuses on technical leadership, not personnel management)
  • Maintaining legacy systems or supporting internal IT infrastructure

Candidate requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience delivering software products
  • At least 3 years in a lead engineer role (conducting code reviews) or architect position (driving key technical decisions)
  • Demonstrated experience developing platform-level products where other teams integrated with your APIs
  • Strong engagement with AI tools, continuously experimenting and exploring new capabilities
