Teaching Assistant   $30 USD/hour

Description

  • Location: On-site at Alpha Schools, Scottsdale (Phoenix), AZ
  • Compensation: $30 per hour | 15–30 hours weekly | Full-time option: $60,000 annually + benefits
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM (flexible scheduling within these hours)

If you're the person who can redirect a distracted 10-year-old before they derail the entire group, this role may be for you. This isn't a position where you stand aside and step in only during crises.

Alpha operates a compressed K-12 model: tightly structured, faster-paced than conventional schooling, and designed around a Guide whose sole focus is delivering instruction. This system functions because someone manages the operational foundation — ensuring transitions occur on schedule, materials are prepared ahead of each lesson, and student focus is maintained before minor distractions escalate.

You'll be engaged from day one. There is no gradual onboarding period. Your role includes monitoring the classroom environment, implementing Alpha's approved motivational strategies (structured prompts, positive reinforcement, immediate redirection), and preparing each activity so the Guide can begin instruction without delay. When executed correctly, your interventions bring drifting students back on task before the lesson loses momentum. Performance standards are explicit: materials ready before every lesson, 95% of transitions completed on time, consistent student engagement.

As you gain fluency in Alpha's approach, your responsibility expands. Assistants who demonstrate mastery of operational systems advance to broader classroom roles — and for qualified candidates, the pathway to Guide is straightforward. Submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Managing student transitions between activities (approximately 30% of your time): tracking time, prompting movement, and applying positive reinforcement to maintain orderly, punctual transitions
  • Setting up classroom materials ahead of each lesson by collecting supplies, arranging them according to the activity plan, and verifying that setup aligns with the Guide's specifications before instruction starts
  • Supporting student engagement during structured activities (approximately 40% of your time) by observing participation, detecting disengagement quickly, and applying Alpha-approved classroom management methods to redirect students without disrupting instruction

What you will NOT be doing

  • Remaining in the background until problems arise — this position demands active involvement and continuous decision-making throughout each school day
  • Creating lesson plans, developing activity content, or being responsible for student academic performance (those are the Guide's duties)
  • Developing your own methods for managing student behavior; Alpha's motivational techniques are standardized and must be applied uniformly
  • Handling facility maintenance, coordinating carpool, or participating in after-hours events; your focus is classroom operations during instructional hours

Key responsibilities

Maintain Alpha's classroom operations so Guides remain focused exclusively on instruction.

Candidate requirements

  • Available to work on-site at our Scottsdale campus.

  • Prior experience working with children ages 5–14 in structured environments (school, camp, childcare, tutoring, or coaching settings).
  • Capacity to coordinate people, materials, and activities efficiently and under time constraints.
  • Comfortable working with children and redirecting behavior using positive encouragement.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Direct experience managing groups of children in active settings (camp counselor, classroom aide, teacher's aide, paraprofessional, youth sports coach, or after-school program staff)
  • Background in mastery-based, competency-based, or highly structured learning environments (Montessori, project-based learning, or comparable models)
  • Demonstrated ability to keep groups on schedule through positive redirection without escalating to higher-level adult intervention
