Loneliness can keep you from being your full self at work. In this episode, Andrew speaks to expert Kaleem Clarkson on the types of connection in remote work - & if we’re doing enough to create them.

Hey, Welcome Back

Guess what?

🎉We’ve hit the big 5-0 on Out of Office!

It’s nearly been a whole year of bending and reshaping the rules of remote work.

I’ve circled the globe virtually and physically, engaging with the best and brightest remote workers around. It’s been a ride!

To mark this massive milestone, I’m here to help corporate culture confront its beliefs about the social dynamics of remote work. That means tackling some of the trickier social issues that we all face (at some point).

🥀 Feeling lonely and isolated

🙇‍♀️ Struggling to collaborate with colleagues miles away

☕ Having to pay for the coffee we drink (is that just me?)

And I’m not doing it alone.

For some, switching to home-based work was a shock to their systems. Their social systems! They lost the one reason they had to leave the house every day.

And that’s no small adjustment.

🤔 Have you ever felt this way?

That’s why I’ve brought in the big guns to crack ‘the connection conundrum.’

🧔🏿 Meet Kaleem Clarkson, co-founder and COO of Blend Me Inc, and a LinkedIn Top Voice on Remote Work. He’s been featured in Harvard Business Review, and he won our Short Storyteller title in Crossover’s recent Remote Leadership Awards.

There’s no better expert to chat to about the social dynamics of remote work.

😱 That’s why he’s here and wow do we get into it.

A lot of remote workers are having a hard time and it’s because of missing connections. It’s a complex and multifaceted dynamic that is still being researched and explored.

One thing is for certain: if left unresolved it takes its toll.

🌟 So, what role do remote companies play in the social wellbeing of their workers?

Kaleem argues that social connection isn’t just something that’s nice to have. These companies have a social responsibility to help their people connect.

It’s a different way to work and it demands a different set of social rules.

📤 Join Kaleem and I as we unpack the research that says you need three distinct types of connections to be your full self. Kaleem asks – why do companies ignore the third type of connection when it’s so fundamental to the way we perform at work? Then he proposes some incredible strategies and solutions.

Building connection as remote workers is easier when companies choose to help.

“Helping somebody else feel seen, helping someone else with being lonely and isolated has a major impact on your own personal feeling of connection. You don't have to be a manager or a leader to help someone be seen.” – Kaleem Clarkson, 2023

It’s episode 50 and Kaleem goes deep into the highs and lows of social connection. We kick off with his origin story, then segway into the latest research from Buffer and what it means for people working remotely today.

🧭 We explore the tough questions around intentional connection and venture into the touchy subject of workplace intimacy.

Then Kaleem shares a revealing personal story that sheds light on his passionate mission to help remote workers thrive professionally AND personally.

Don't miss out as we stitch new patterns into the social fabric of remote work, weaving in the unspoken truths with Kaleem Clarkson's expertise.

📽️ This week on Episode 50:

🍻 How Kaleem tapped into remote work’s social ties with keg learning

💜 Discover the three types of social connection that makes a person whole

🥺 Hear the heart-breaking story that inspires his personal mission

📈 Find out why your distributed team’s vibe is the new bottom line

😏 Decode the controversial third connection type…workplace intimacy

A big thank-you to Kaleem Clarkson for his brave transparency, and for guiding us through the labyrinth of social connection in remote work.

You can follow him on LinkedIn or check out his website here.

Watch the episode now and come away with fresh insights on how you can make your remote team a happier, more social environment. Share it far and wide.

🌞 Enjoy!

The future is social connectedness,

Andrew
