Platform Architect   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We're looking for Platform Architects to design the foundations that other teams build on. You'll work on platform-level products where your API decisions, architectural patterns, and documentation shape how multiple teams develop.

Products you might work on:

  • TimeBack: Educational platform powering Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
  • Incept: Content generation platform creating personalized educational content for multiple learning applications
  • Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform processing tens of thousands of applicants monthly
  • This is a design-heavy role: 50% writing specs, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% implementing complex platform features; 20% reviewing and guiding others. You have technical authority over architectural decisions. After alignment with the team, your specs are mandatory.

Small team of strong peers, high ownership, no bureaucracy. You design it, you build it, you own it.

What you will be doing

  • Writing specs before implementation begins
  • Designing APIs with backward compatibility and extensibility
  • Documenting Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) with rationale
  • Building complex platform features
  • Reviewing PRs for architectural consistency

What you will NOT be doing

  • Heavy team leadership or people management
  • Working on simple app-level products
  • Sitting in endless meetings
  • Pure architecture without implementation

Candidate requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience
  • At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
  • Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
  • Experience with AI tools in development workflow
