We are an organization where acquisitions of software companies is one of our primary goals. Our plan for 2018 is the acquisition of 50 companies.

Overall you will be expected to run a world-class software engineering organization using radically differentiated processes. In parallel, you will run operations across a variety of disciplines including SaaSOps, IT Ops, Support, Marketing, Sales, and Finance. You will be expected to hire, coach, and manage 5-15 VP level executives who will be managing global groups with our factory-like processes.

Questions
and Answers
  • How do you perform in the role of a SVP of engineering when all your teams are remote?

We use communication tools such as GoToMeeting, Zoom, Skype, and Slack. We also ensure that our processes are well documented in the form of playbooks and have developed a tool, Worksmart Pro, which enables us to keep track of time and applications used. This data allows us to form a diary of how our partners spend their day and coach them on improved productivity.

  • Do you use Agile?

Like most organizations, we make use of subsets of Agile. The one key difference though is that our teams are highly specialized in the task they do. For example, we have a maintenance team whose only task is to fix bugs on our products. Rather than being product specialists they are process specialists.

  • Does an SVP need to travel in this role?

An SVP of Engineering is not expected to travel as all our management is done remotely.

  • What does a typical SVP day look like?

The days of SVPs are usually filled with team management meetings, executive level meetings, or 1-2-1 meetings with your direct reports. These sessions are typically focussed on resolving blockers for the organization or identifying process improvements which will drive productivity improvement and cost reductions. You can also expect to have a significant number of meetings where you are meeting with teams within your organisation to run deep dives on issues you may be facing within your organisation.

  • Does an SVP work weekends or many hours during the week?

You are expected to deliver 40-hours a week. You are also the manager of your own time and results will guide your weekly schedule.
